All About Our Single Ingredient Protein Treats
What are your treats made from?
Our treats are made from 100% Australian proteins — nothing else. No fillers, no preservatives, no mystery additives. Just real, single-ingredient goodness that dogs go absolutely wild for.
Where does your meat come from?
Everything is farmed, hunted or fished right here in Australia. No imports, no iffy origins. Whether it's kangaroo, chicken, rabbit or beef, you can trust it's genuinely local.
What does "air-dried" mean?
Air-drying is a slow, gentle process that removes moisture at low heat — which means all the natural nutrients, flavour and goodness stay locked in. Think of it as nature's way of preserving things, minus any artificial nasties.
Do you use any preservatives or additives?
Nope. Not a single one. The air-drying process means we simply don't need them. What you see on the label is exactly what you get.
Are your treats safe for all dogs?
Our treats are natural and single-ingredient, which makes them a great option for most dogs — including those with sensitive tummies or food sensitivities. That said, every dog is different, so if your pup has a known allergy or health condition, we'd always recommend checking with your vet first.
Why do some treats vary in size, shape or colour?
Because they're real food.
Unlike highly processed treats, our products come from real animals, which means every piece is naturally unique. Some variation is completely normal and one of the signs you're feeding a natural product.
Why does my dog's favourite treat sometimes look different?
Natural products vary between animals, seasons and batches.
A kangaroo tail, pig ear or beef tendon won't look exactly the same every time, but the quality and care behind each product remain the same.
Can I feed your treats to my cat?
Yes! While we're called The Farmer's Dog, we've discovered quite a few cats are determined to get in on the action too —especially our single-ingredient options like chicken breast and sardines.
You may have noticed many dog treats in supermarkets and pet stores say "must not be fed to cats." This is generally because protein based dog treats are required to be irradiated when imported into Australia and irradiation has historically been linked to health issues in cats.
Not to fear, as all of our proteins are sourced here is Australia, they don't need to go through that process and all of our treats are cat friendly.
As always, treats should be offered appropriately for your pet's size, age and dietary needs. Just don't be surprised if your cat starts hanging around whenever the treat bag comes out.
Choosing the Right Treat
Are your treats suitable for puppies?
Many are, but it depends on your puppy's age, size and chewing ability.
Softer options such as chicken breast, liver treats and some jerky products are often popular choices for younger dogs. Harder chews should always be selected appropriately and fed under supervision.
If you're not sure where to start, get in touch and we'll happily point you in the right direction.
Are your treats suitable for senior dogs?
Yes. Many older dogs enjoy softer treats such as liver, jerky, chicken breast, sardines and other easy-to-chew options.
We also have longer-lasting chews available for seniors who still enjoy putting their chompers to work.
Which treats are best for strong chewers?
Dogs that love a challenge often enjoy:
- Beef Tendons
- Bully Sticks
- Braided Bully Sticks
- Medium Bull Chews
- Kangaroo Tail Bones
- Deer Antlers
- Goat Horns
Every dog chews differently, so we recommend choosing products appropriate for your dog's size and chewing style and always supervising chewing sessions.
My dog is a picky eater. Will they like these?
We can't make any promises—dogs can be wonderfully stubborn.
That said, most dogs go absolutely nuts for natural treats. In our experience, the smellier the treat, the better the review.
My dog has food sensitivities. Which treats should I choose?
Many customers look for simple, single-protein treats when managing dietary sensitivities. Popular options include kangaroo, venison, duck and crocodile. Every dog is different, however, so we recommend speaking with your vet if your dog has diagnosed allergies or specific dietary requirements.
Is kangaroo a good protein for dogs?
Kangaroo is a naturally lean protein source and is a popular choice among Australian dog owners looking for alternative protein options.
As with any food, suitability will vary between individual dogs.
Feeding & Storage
Are your treats suitable as a complete meal or just a snack?
Our treats are just that — treats! They're perfect as a reward, training aid or just a little something to make tails wag. They're not formulated as a complete diet, so we recommend keeping them as a fun addition to your dog's regular meals.
How much should I give my dog?
Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog's daily food intake — that's the general rule of thumb. Start small, especially with new proteins, and keep an eye on how your pup responds.
Are bones and chews safe for dogs?
Every dog chews differently, and no bone or chew can be guaranteed risk-free.
Traditional cooked bones are exposed to high temperatures, which can alter the bone's structure and make it more brittle. This brittleness can increase the likelihood of the bone cracking or breaking into sharp pieces when chewed.
Air-dried bones are preserved using a gentle drying process rather than being cooked at high temperatures. Because they aren't subjected to the same intense heat, they generally retain more of their natural structure and flexibility.
We recommend selecting products appropriate for your dog's size, age and chewing style and always supervising while chewing.
If you're unsure which product is best suited to your dog, we're happy to help.
How should I store the treats?
Keep them in a cool, dry place away from heat, humidity and direct sunlight. For optimum freshness, pop them in an airtight container and use within the timeframe shown on the packaging. Do not refrigerate.
How long do the treats last?
When purchasing from us online, all treats will have a minimum of 6 months best before date. For best quality, we recommend keeping packs sealed after opening and storing them according to the storage instructions.
I found a bug in my treats. Should I be concerned?
As much as we'd love to say every creature on the farm knows to stay out of the treat bags, the occasional hide beetle or larder beetle can sometimes sneak through, particularly in the warmer months or if stored in humid spots. These little guys are common pests of dried animal products and can occasionally be found in natural pet treats, jerky and dried foods.
They are not generally considered a health risk to healthy dogs and cats, but we completely understand that finding one isn't the experience you were expecting.
Because our treats are made from real Australian ingredients and contain no artificial preservatives, they're sometimes just as appealing to these persistent little critters as they are to dogs.
If you ever discover evidence of insects in your treats, please get in touch with us. We'll investigate the issue and do our best to make things right.

Other Stuff
Are you really a family business?
Does a dog wag its tail? Of course we are!
It's Paul and Kim at the helm, with our kids Bea and Jasper pitching in (whether they like it or not). Kim's dad John also works with us - semi-retired, he reckons. We're not sure he knows what that word means. And let's not forget our two most dedicated team members - Nixie and Maple, who handle quality control and clean-up crew duties with an enthusiasm that frankly puts the rest of us to shame. Every treat is packed with care by real hands here in the Macedon Ranges of regional Victoria. It's a real family affair, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Is your packaging eco-friendly?
Our packaging is designed, printed and produced locally right here in Victoria — because supporting Aussie businesses matters to us. All of our tubs and stickers are recyclable in your home recycling bin. We're always looking at ways to do better for the environment too, so watch this space.
What happens to treats that don't get sold?
We're big believers in making the most of every animal and wasting as little as possible.
From time to time, we end up with excess stock, odd-sized pieces, damaged packaging or products approaching their best-before date. Rather than letting perfectly good treats go to waste, we donate them to local animal shelters and rescue organisations whenever we can.
It's a small way we can support dogs who are still waiting to find their forever homes while staying true to our nose-to-tail philosophy.
Because every good dog deserves a treat.
